Mrs. Easterling’s Culinary 1 class in our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism class have been hard at work diving into ServSafe Chapter 7 – Flow of Food: Storage! Students practiced proper food labeling, prep dates, and use-by dates to ensure food safety and quality in a professional kitchen. From understanding how to prevent cross-contamination to learning how to properly store and track food, these future chefs are building skills that will last a lifetime. Safety and organization are just as important as great flavor! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳 So proud of our students for taking food safety seriously and applying real-world restaurant standards in the classroom!

Our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism students in Culinary I created latkes as part of a lesson on the holiday Hanukkah, using a family recipe from our own Mrs. Nease.

Latkes are traditional potato pancakes fried in oil. They are eaten during Hanukkah to symbolize the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days in the rededicated Temple in Jerusalem. Through this hands-on experience, students learned not only culinary techniques, but also the cultural and historical significance behind this holiday tradition.

A couple of weeks ago, students in our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism Event Planning class, took part in an interactive challenge called Hospitality Survivor! During our discussion on essential skills for success in the hospitality industry, one quality stood out above the rest—leadership. Our class leaders showcased their strategic thinking by carefully selecting their survivor teams.

The competition featured a unique twist: each team had just two minutes to complete a blindfolded activity, setting both an informal and formal place setting. The catch? They could only receive utensils from their teammates—no peeking or guiding hands allowed!

The energy in the room was great, and the students demonstrated teamwork, communication, and creativity under pressure. Everyone had a blast, and we celebrated some impressive class winners!

Students in Mr. Sumerlin’s 11th grade U.S. History classes have been learning about resistance movements against Nazi and fascist occupations in Europe.

To help students better understand the importance of resistance, Hanukkah was used as an example of resistance from ancient times through the modern era. Hanukkah commemorates the Jewish people’s successful resistance against religious oppression over 2,000 years ago and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. The holiday also remembers the miracle of a small amount of oil that was only expected to last one day but burned for eight days, symbolizing perseverance and hope.

A special thank you to Mrs. Nease for speaking with our students and helping them better understand the history and relevance of Hanukkah.

Students in our Academy of Agri-Science have been putting their wood shop skills to work as they learned how to safely use a circular saw, read and use a tape measure, and problem-solve through every cut and connection—all to bring our chicken house project closer to completion. From measuring twice (and sometimes three times) to making confident cuts, they’re gaining skills that go far beyond the classroom. Proud of the teamwork, focus, and growth happening one board at a time!
We are exceptionally thankful for our Advisory Committee member Mr. Randy Reed for volunteering his time to pass on his knowledge and expertise for this project!
